Since 1989, Stone Forest has pushed the kitchen and bath design industry with its unique contemporary designs, sinuous forms, and unique approach to working with natural materials, including stone, bronze, bamboo, hardwood, copper and iron. While extending into using metals, their true specialty (if I may say so) is preparing some of the absolute best custom stone bathtubs.

The Glass House by Steve Hermann

modern architecture

This Glass House joins our “Best of” list… And, it’s easy to see why! Worth $35 million, this home is surely the avant-garde of modern architecture and interior design. Designed by California-celebrated designer, Steve Hermann, the home was originally designed for himself — but after getting married and having a child, the creative genius decided that the 5 bedroom home no longer matched what he needed for his small family.

Best Architecture

Hawk Nest is a high-tech equestrian home with every luxurious amenity one could possibly imagine. Scott Baxter, a serial entrepreneur, whose high-tech background includes founding Icon CMT Corporation, a leading Internet solutions provider, which sold in 1998 to Qwest Communications, helping launch Teoma Technologies, which was acquired by Ask Jeeves, and getting in on the ground floor as an investor in Google before the stock went public.

When looking to build the perfect horse farm in Bergen County New Jersey, he hired top residential architect, William Toth of Bol Architecture, and leading interior designer Frank DelleDonne. The goal: to build an updated reinterpretation of a tradition English country manor with state-of-the-art technology and the very best of design.

The estate, which includes a “14,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom, seven-full and three-half-bath main house with adjacent guest quarters, stables, guest quarters, paddocks and a 14,000-square-foot indoor riding arena, took a talented team of architects, designers and craftsmen more than five years of planning, selecting, importing and installing. No amenity was overlooked. No corners were cut. No expense was spared,” writes “Only natural materials were used, unlike the fake, man-made, mass-produced imitations commonly used in construction today. Hawk Nest is faced in solid, square-cut granite, with window surrounds carved from real Indiana limestone and the Vermont slate roof plus copper-clad windows and doors that won’t rust, mean that the estate is virtually maintenance free.” Continue reading “It’s all in the details”

Stunning Oakland Home

Modern Architecture by Kanner Architecture
Glass house design by Kanner Architecture

This is South Bay minimalism at its best, by  Kanner Architects. The architectural integrity of this impressive home is perhaps the most telling feature of what makes Kanner Architects one of the best firms in the country. Open views of the SF bay, this cliffside retreat is simply divine.

Fresh Home writes, “Oakland House from California is a stunning project of notable size and dramatic vistas. Located in the hills of Oakland, this building manages to reign over and capture incredible landscapes of the San Francisco bay. Here is some insight from the architects: ‘The predominantly south-southwest orientation required deep overhangs to cut down glare and soften the light quality in the home.

Most expensive school in the US

As we know, the politics of architecture can get a little out-of-hand — especially when it comes from tax payers dollars. The focus of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, launching in LA next month, has been on the controversial, with many reporting that the educational institution is superfluous given the current economy and the suffering school district’s heavy budget-cutting as it laid off over 3,000 teachers recently.

Politics aside, no one can argue that it isn’t good for the kids who will attend classes there. Having said that, what let’s get to the design of the school and what makes this one of the “Best of design”. It is, by far, one of the absolute best preservation builds in the history of the United States.

The Spanish Mediterranean-style Ambassador Hotel was designed in 1921 by Myron Hunt, and has hosted  The Oscars several times, and Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated there in 1968.
